Postsolstice Reading
Finished A.M. Shine’s horror tale The Watchers during a bout of early morning insomnia (one of the 3 kinds I shuffle through). It’s not a spoiler to let you know it concerns faeries. Interestingly - it taught me a bit about what I like to read and what I don’t. There were passages where I was riveted, but just like when I am watching action movies, I am skimming through those scenes to get to the effect of the action on characters. Better yet if the characters are revealed during those scenes. This is clearly not everyone’s cup of tea… I was drawn to the depiction of the coop—a viewing booth/prison/safehouse where faeries study humans but the reverse does not seem possible although it was constructed for a two-way encounter. The multi-purposeness of that enclosure was perhaps the section of the book that caught me most. Made me want to go back to Bachelard’s The Poetics of Space. That might be where I start my new year.
